Born in Delft 23 oktober 1968, 1997 Graduated Cum Laude from ABK Minerva Groningen
In 1997, Joyce Eijkhout graduated cum laude from the ABK-Minerva. From the very beginning, she has been fascinated by philosophical questions: the journey of Odysseus, the influence of family history, and the question of which experiences, memories, or unfinished lives continue to repeat themselves from generation to generation. Nature/nurture issues
When she looked at her two-year-old daughter back then, she saw a new life — uninhibited, curious, and full of joy, like a blank page. At the same time, she wondered how many memories, emotions, and family history were already present within her.
And also whether and how one could escape the cruelty of repetition. That field of tension, combined with her feelings and experiences as a woman, and the ambiguity and suffering in relationships, has since formed the core of her work.
She connects these philosophical questions and adult emotions with child figures and their vulnerable presence.
It is precisely the combination of innocence and emotional charge that evokes an alienating atmosphere. In a magical realist style, she places characters in staged settings reminiscent of a film set or photo studio. Just as the painted backgrounds of romantic gardens or harbor scenes were used for (photo) portraits in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The seams of walls and corners remain subtly visible, making it unclear whether the environment actually exists or is fictional. There are similarities with Dada and the Leipzig School.
